Suzanne Cory High School is a co-educational government school for academically gifted students in Werribee, a suburb of Melbourne. Suzanne Cory High School: Eligibility Criteria

The selective school exams are highly competitive and subject to specific requirements. Understanding these conditions is key to a successful application. Candidates must meet the following criteria:

Citizenship and Residency:

Applicants must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens living in Australia, or hold a visa / ImmiCard that exempts them from paying international student fees at Victorian government schools. Students may live in Victoria, interstate, or overseas, but must meet these requirements by the time offers are made. However, Suzanne Cory High School doesn’t accept fee-paying international students.
Year Level:

For Year 9 entry, applicants must be in their second year of secondary schooling (Year 8 or equivalent) at the time of application. Plus, they must not have previously sat for the Year 9 entry exam. Places in Years 10 and 11 are limited and generally allocated according to the school’s discretion.
Entrance Exam:

For Year 9 entry, students must sit the ACER selective entry exam, administered by the Department of Education. It is held at different venues across Victoria in June every year. Whereas, for Years 10 and 11, applicants must appear for the Edutest exam, which is managed independently on behalf of Suzanne Cory High School.

Program Entry and Preparation Timeline

Candidates often struggle to solve challenging questions within the limited time available during the exam for selective entry schools. That’s why a well-planned study plan is key to better performance. We recommend following a clear preparation timeline, based on exam dates. We recommend the following approach:

Year 9

For those targeting Year 9, the entrance exam takes place between June and July, wherein an application window that opens in February or March and closes mid-May. To maximise preparation, consider joining our program in the later terms of Year 7 or the early terms of Year 8.

Years 10 and 11

Here, the entry depends on available vacancies and is managed by each school separately. Since places are limited with high competition, we suggest joining our program in Term 3 or 4 of Year 8, or the first two terms of Year 9.

Exam Format and Structure

The selective entry exam assesses a student’s aptitude for logical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, comprehension and creative thinking. It consists of multiple-choice questions and written tasks. Below are the five sections covered in the exam:

30 minutes for 60 questions: Verbal General Ability
30 minutes for 50 questions: Quantitative General Ability
30 minutes for 35 questions: Reading Reasoning
30 minutes for 35 questions: Mathematical Reasoning
20 minutes for 2 questions: Writing Ability

Selection Criteria

Entrance exam performance forms the main basis for selection at Suzanne Cory High School. A small number of places are set aside under the ‘Equity Consideration’ category. In addition, up to five per cent of places may be offered through the ‘Principal’s Discretion’ category. This process involves a written application, submission of supporting documents such as academic reports, co-curricular involvement, and in some cases, an interview.
