Are you wondering who can appear for the selective entry exam? Well, to apply, your child must meet the Department of Education’s residency and academic requirements. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  1. Citizenship and Residency:

To be eligible, students must be:

    1. Australian citizens, or
    2. New Zealand citizens living in Australia, or
    3. Hold a visa (such as permanent residency) that exempts them from international school fees
    4. Applicants from government, non-government, and home school settings are also eligible
    5. Fee-paying international students enrolled in Victorian schools are not eligible to apply
  2. Year Level:

Students seeking admission to Year 9 in Mac.Rob should not have previously sat the Victorian Selective Entry High School (SEHS) exam. Every year, approximately 300 places are offered. Entry into Years 10 and 11 is more limited, with only a few places available annually, depending on vacancies from the previous year’s cohort.

Program Entry and Preparation Timeline

Many students compete each year in selective school exams. To stay ahead, candidates need a clear and structured study plan to help them pass with flying colours. Below are the key exam dates and the best times to start preparations:

Year 9

If a student is aiming for Year 9 entry, applications open early in the year and close by mid-May. The entrance exam is usually scheduled between June and July. Beginning our program in Term 3 or 4 of Year 7, or Term 1 or 2 of Year 8, gives you plenty of time to prepare thoroughly.

Years 10 and 11

The entry to these years depends on available vacancies and is managed separately by the Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School. To be fully prepared for this selection process, we suggest starting our program in the later terms of Year 8 or at the start of Year 9.

Exam Format and Structure

The examination is approximately three hours long. It assesses a student’s aptitude for problem solving, logical thinking, reasoning and their ability to apply known concepts to new situations. Below is the exam format for entry into selective entry schools:

  • Quantitative General Ability (50 questions, 30 minutes)

  • Verbal General Ability (60 questions, 30 minutes)

  • Writing (2 questions, 20 minutes)

  • Reading Reasoning (35 questions, 30 minutes)

  • Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 30 minutes)
