Melbourne High School: Eligibility Criteria

Citizenship and Residency:

Before appearing for the selective school exam, the applicant must be:
1. An Australian citizen, or
2. A New Zealand citizen living in Australia, or
3. A holder of a visa or ImmiCard, which exempts them from paying International Student Fees to attend a Victorian government school.
4. Fee-paying international students and temporary students are not eligible to apply.
5. Students may live in Victoria, interstate, or overseas, but must meet the above requirements by the time offers are made.

Year Level:

Most students enter at Year 9, so applicants must be in their second year of secondary schooling (Year 8 or equivalent) at the time of application. For Year 10 entries, the school selects at least 26 students each year. The 4% cap and Principal’s Discretionary Category do not apply for Year 10 entry.

A limited number of Year 11 places are offered to students who show strong achievement in Visual and Performing Arts or Humanities. To be considered, they need to be enrolled in a full-time Year 10 course and meet the required citizenship or residency conditions. If accepted, they will be expected to study at least two VCE subjects in the Arts and Humanities areas during Years 11 and 12.
Entrance Exam:

When students are planning to enrol in Year 9, they need to take a written assessment of three hours. It includes reasoning (reading and mathematics), general ability (verbal and quantitative), and writing skills. For entry to Year 10, applicants must take the Academic Abilities Assessment Test (conducted by Edutest). Selection is based on the application form, evidence of co-curricular involvement, school reports, test results, and an interview for shortlisted applicants. For Year 11 (Arts and Humanities) intake, the process looks at students’ written application, supporting documents, an audition if required, an interview, and his/her academic performance.

Program Entry and Preparation Timeline

Year 9

The entrance exam for Year 9 usually takes place in June, with enrolment typically open from February or March until mid-May. We advise beginning our program in Term 3 or 4 of Year 7 or the first half of Year 8 to allow sufficient preparation

Years 10 and 11

Each school controls Year 10 and 11 admissions based on available spots, making entry highly competitive. To be well-prepared, most students begin our program in Term 3 or 4 of Year 8 or early Year 9.

Exam Format and Structure

The selective entry exam evaluates a candidate’s capabilities through written reasoning, analysis and problem‑solving tasks. Our selective school tutoring program then builds on these skills with tailored exercises. The exam will have the following sections:

30 minutes for 60 questions: Verbal General Ability
30 minutes for 50 questions: Quantitative General Ability
30 minutes for 35 questions: Reading Reasoning
30 minutes for 35 questions: Mathematical Reasoning
20 minutes for 2 questions: Writing Ability

Selection Criteria
