Nossal High School Entrance Exam: Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must pass the selective school exams for admission to Nossal High School. All applicants must meet these standards set by the Department of Education:

Citizenship and Residency:
The student must be an Australian citizen, or a New Zealand citizen in Australia or hold a visa (e.g. permanent resident) that waives international school fees. Moreover, students from government, non-government, and homeschooling backgrounds are also eligible to apply. This applies to residents of Victoria, as well as students residing interstate or overseas.

Year Level:
The entry is for year 9s only. They should not have previously sat for the Victorian Selective Entry High School (SEHS) exam. Entry for years 10–12 is managed directly by Nossal High School and depends on available vacancies.

Entrance Exam:
Applicants must submit an application in Year 8 and take the ACER Selective Entry exam. The exam is for 3-4 hours, which includes 5 tests on Reasoning (reading and mathematics), General ability (Verbal and quantitative) and a Writing task.

Exam Format and Structure
Selective entry exams are highly competitive and conducted over a three-hour duration. Our program helps students build strong subject knowledge while developing effective time management skills. The exam includes five key components:
- 30 minutes for 60 questions: Verbal General Ability
- 30 minutes for 50 questions: Quantitative General Ability
20 minutes for 2 questions: Writing Ability
30 minutes for 35 questions: Reading Reasoning
30 minutes for 35 questions: Mathematical Reasoning
Selection Criteria for Nossal High School
For Nossal High School, entrance exam performance is the primary factor considered. A limited number of places are reserved for equity considerations and the principal’s discretion. These may require additional documentation and, in some cases, an interview too.

Yes, we do. There is one hour for tests every week during the last five months of preparation. Moreover, two mock tests will be held in the last two months of the preparation period.
Admission to Nossal High School is very competitive. With only around 208 Year 9 places available and many strong applicants, competition remains consistently high each year.
Parent payment contributions are set each year by the School Council. The fees include essential learning items, camps, excursions, and optional activities, and these are listed as a single amount for each year level.
It depends on both the level of competition for places and the students’ scores who select Nossal High School as their first preference. As a result, there is no fixed cut-off. The admission is based on the relative performance of applicants each year.
